Proposed Change to the Composition of Regional Council
One Additional Member for West Lincoln

Pursuant to sections 218 and 219 of the Municipal Act, 2001, Niagara Regional Council at its meeting of July 20, 2017 passed a resolution requesting the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to approve a Regulation to change the composition of Regional Council by adding an additional member for the Township of West Lincoln.

The Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing has now approved the Regulation enabling
Regional Council to consider a by-law to increase the composition for the 2018 Municipal
Election. An additional member would increase the composition of Regional Council from 31 to
32 members.

Approval process: triple majority
The by-law is subject to a triple majority vote. This means that to take effect the change
requires approval from Regional Council and approval from a majority of Local Area Municipal
Councils representing a majority of electors.

Prior to Regional Council considering the proposed by-law on December 7, 2017, the public is
invited to provide input by attending a public meeting or providing written submissions.
