Chorus Niagara Ein Deutsches Requiem

Chorus Niagara Ein Deutsches Requiem

Saturday, November 10, 2018 - 19:30

Opening its 56th season, Chorus Niagara and Artistic Director Robert Cooper proudly present EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM, featuring Johannes Brahms' moving German Requiem, plus contemporary composer Ola Gjeilo's Dark Night Of The Soul.

A humanist Requiem, Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem is both grand and intimate, meditative and dramatic, offering consolation to the living and soothing the universal need for comfort in times of profound loss. 'A German Requiem', Brahms' most expansive and moving oratorio is a work of consolation for those left behind - it is an anthem for our turbulent times. Artistic Director and Conductor Robert Cooper notes, "Brahms' Requiem was my first classical stereo LP as a teenager. The music ALONE captivated and moved me deeply. Now, I understand a little better Brahms' message and am struck even more by its immediacy of appeal and moved even more by its grandeur, sweep and sublime living message of comfort and hope for all people."

Dark Night of the Soul, written in 2010, is a dramatic work by American-based Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, featuring a musical setting of a passionate poem penned by St. John of the Cross, 16th-century Spanish priest, reformer and mystic.

Performing with CHORUS NIAGARA are Avanti Chamber Singers, under the baton of Brock University's Dr. Rachel Rensink-Hoff. Niagara’s Avanti Chamber Singers is a community-based mixed chamber choir, performing mainstream choral literature, both accompanied and a cappella, including Canadian and Niagara-based composers. Dr. Rensink-Hoff notes, "The Avanti Chamber Singers are so delighted to be collaborating with Chorus Niagara this season. Ola Gjeilo’s Dark Night of the Soul and the Brahms Requiem are a perfect pairing as both so powerfully capture the human experience of grief in all its complexity. We have embarked on a moving journey delving into these works and look forward to sharing this experience with our audience next week."

Joining the 130 singers is the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, prepared by Music Director and Conductor Bradley Thachuk. A cultural treasure for seven decades, the NSO is a professional orchestra of over 50 musicians providing classical and contemporary orchestral music to more than 12,000 residents of the Niagara Region annually.

Featured soloists are two veterans of the Canadian classical music scene, Leslie Fagan, soprano and Alexander Dobson, baritone. Ms. Fagan has delighted audiences and critics alike at Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Bordeaux Opera House, and Roy Thomson Hall. Dobson has been praised for his musical and dramatic artistry on both opera and concert stages.

Chorus Niagara thanks Soloist Sponsor, Jo Henderson and Conductor Sponsor, Norris Walker for their generous financial support of this concert.
