We know it's been a really long winter when we don't even realize how soon daylight saving time (or daylight savings time, as most of us say) is upon us.  And upon us it is!  As of 2 a.m. on March 8, clocks go forward an hour, thereby giving most of us more daylight as of Sunday evening. For most of us, it can't come fast enough!

Council approved funding for a Hotel Feasibility Study (that will be recouped once the land has been sold) to examine the economic viability of developing a hotel on Town-owned lands in the East Fonthill area along Rice Road at Regional Road 20. Council has already determined that a medical centre, retirement facility and Wellspring Niagara are all in the best interests of the community, including exploring the design of a potential multifaceted community centre.

The Kinsmen Club of Fonthill and District held their 17th annual Citizen of the Year celebration tonight at the old Pelham Town Hall. This year's recipients were the husband and wife team of Rosemary and Gary Chambers who are well known in Pelham for their efforts to keep Pelham's heritage alive .Kin Brian Iggulden was the Master of Ceremonies introducing dignitaries at the head table and welcoming close to 100 people in attendance, a tribute in itself to the support for Gary and Rosemary Chambers. A moment of silence was held in memory of a former Citizen of the Year, Fred Disher, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Many former Citizens of the year were acknowledged.

My decision to join the Professional Referral Group a few years ago was based on the quality of other professionals within the group and the various professional sectors they represented.  Building my own network of trusted professionals allows me to provide my clients with a few contacts when they are in need of specific services.  As a Chartered Financial Divorce Specialist and Family Mediator it is very important that I remain a “financial & mediator neutral” so I always try to give my clients at least a couple of quality contacts when needed.

We approved the 2015 Operating Budget during our Town Council meeting on February 17. It translates to an increase of 1.92% for the average residential Pelham property (assessed at $302,815).  While Council approved a minimal impact to you and other property tax-payers, we did increase the Town’s level of service and support the ongoing sustainability of our infrastructure.

As a translator, every so often I come across a dilemma…none of the current existing terms in one language convey exactly what I’m trying to express in another, so I’m tempted to coin a new term and put it in quotation marks for clarity’s sake.  People do this sometimes as a last resort or to keep things interesting.  It’s not always acceptable though. It really depends on the situation.

The Fenwick and Fonthill Lions and Lioness held its annual Effective Speaking Contest at the Fenwick Lions Hall on Feb. 23rd.

In 2009 Faith Mepham, pictured above, received Bronwyn her Special Skills Dog from Dog Guides Canada to assist her in everyday independent living. Funds for the Bronwyn came from proceeds of the annual Biketoberfest® Harley-Davidson® motorcycle draw held by the Fabulous Fenwick Lions.  The Fenwick Lions have maintained contact with Faith over the past few years and have sponsored her in several Purina Walk for Dog Guides events.

Strong winds or tornadoes have the ability to blow off roofs, or even just to remove shingles that are vital in protecting the home from rain, snow, sleet, or hail. The condition of the roof and the construction of the roof play a major role in determining whether the roof will be able to sustain strong winds. If your roof has been damaged whether large or small it is important to take a few basic steps initially to ensure no further damage.

We left off the other day with happy tales of my visits to Indulgence Bakery and Mossimo’s Pizza in Pelham. The picture above is a slightly dopey smile of pure, unadulterated, carbohydrate-induced contentment. High carb stupor might not make for the most glamorous self-portraits.

We all want a solid financial rock under our feet when we retire. The problem is… it can be hard to save for retirement, especially if you are struggling to pay a mortgage, car loan and credit card debt. The solution? Roll it up.You may be able to roll your existing high interest debt into your mortgage. You’ll be shocked by what you can save in interest.....Jason Vokey, Mortgage Agent
