This new 10,000 square foot home renovation outlet and donation centre brings Habitat’s celebrated ReStore to 2499 Highway 20 East in Fonthill, allowing residents in the Southern Tier of Niagara better access to discount construction and home goods and a place to donate their gently used items.
At the last meeting of the Niagara Escarpment Commission we received a staff report and a provincial discussion paper on the need to plan for the impacts of climate change. After one of the coldest winters on record, some may be skeptical about the issue of global warming. However, if we look at the global changes rather than local events, it is clear that the temperature of the earth has increased fourteen of the first fifteen years of this century.
At our April 7 meeting, Council received an updated timeline for the design and potential construction of a new Multi-Faceted Community Centre in the East Fonthill area. You will recall that based on a resident survey, a detailed business case analysis and a comparison to industry standards, Council confirmed sustaining demand for a multi-faceted community centre containing a single-pad arena (with the potential second-pad after 2023), a fitness centre, walking / running indoor track, multi-purpose space, and gymnasium sports / uses.
Brock University graduate Andrew Julie, from Fonthill, and his wife Jennifer, have recently purchased the Greens at Brock on Merrittville Highway. They’ve since relaunched it as Brock Golf Course and are in the process of getting the course back into proper shape. Andrew’s knowledge of golf course management comes from growing up around the business. His parents started Sawmill Golf Course in 1976 and still run that operation.

The Bank of Canada announced today that it is holding its key rate steady. Great news if you have a variable-rate mortgage or home equity line of credit, and for those looking to buy, renew or refinance this spring. The announcement noted that “the impact of the oil price shock on growth will be more front-loaded than predicted in January, but not larger.” And that the “Canadian economy is estimated to have stalled in the first quarter of 2015.”
This week the Foundation celebrates 15 years of working with amazing volunteers, donors, charities and staff to build and support smart and carry communities. We've seen the impact of our grants grow from $6,500 in 2001 to more than $1.11 million in 2014. These grants support charities in all sectors in all communities across Niagara. And we've seen our endowment funds grow from $200,000 in 2000 to more than $28 million this month. Donors from all walks of life and from coast to coast to coast here in Niagara have supported our work.

Imagine being an archer in flight, controlling your arrows through a magical medieval setting; or fending off waves of enemies in a trapped western city of Copper Canyon. These are just two original student-created games that will be on display at Niagara College’s second annual Game Development Launch April 16.
