The Ancient Greeks felt that Art is the creative expression of free will.  Unfortunately, it was only practiced by the very rich or the very poor. The rich could afford the time to express themselves and create because they didn’t have to worry about providing for the basic necessities of life. Among the very poor were people driven by the need to create, and they allowed the process of creation to take precedence over providing the creature comforts of life. (Hence the term Starving Artist.)

 

It was a banner year for residential home sales in Niagara. The year-end MLS® sales reports of the Niagara Association of REALTORS® indicate that sales activity in the Region jumped 16.8% in 2015. 

Across Niagara (excluding the Town of Grimsby) there were 7370 homes sold during 2015 compared to 6309 in 2014. The current level of activity reflects a whopping 25.1% increase over the total of 5891 home sales reported in 2013.

By year-end the Niagara 12-month average sale price reached $$274,185 up 8.5 % from the figure of $252,669 recorded at the end of December 2014.

You may recall that during the summer there were no grants available from the Provincial or Federal government for “quality of life investments” like recreational facilities. In July, I informed you that “Since there are currently no Federal or Provincial grants available [for a potential new community centre], the Town will continue to lobby for a policy change and for funding.”

On February 15, 2016, minimum downpayment rules are changing in Canada – for homes worth more than $500,000. The change is straightforward: for any portion of the house price over $500,000, buyers will need to provide 10% downpayment for an insured mortgage. The minimum downpayment for the first $500,000 will remain unchanged at 5%.

Water is the cheapest and most readily available extinguishing agent. The amount of water needed to extinguish a fire depends on numerous factors: the size of the fire (involvement), the fuel load, the chemical and physical attributes of the fuel, the weather, slope or elevation, and firefighting tactics (such as the distance to the fire, the type of nozzle and the stream used, etc.).

Throughout the year, Pelham Cares sees the generosity of our  community, assisting us in supporting Pelham families in need.  It is never more evident than during the Holiday Season! On Dec 5th 2015 approximately eighty volunteers gathered at Rice Road Greenhouses and the Pelham Cares facility, to receive, sort, pack, and transport the tons of food that were so generously donated by the Pelham community.  Our volunteers enjoyed coffee, hot chocolate and treats from Tim Hortons, and pizza from Volcano Pizzeria.

 

Our final sale starts Saturday, January 2nd at 10:00 am and will run until we permanently close our doors  at 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 23rd.
