Patriotic performances mix with Canadian legends and stellar tribute acts this summer for the 12th season of the Fonthill Bandshell Summer Concert Series. The 2017 lineup features 12 great performances between June 22 and Sept. 7, from award-winning entertainers and musicians hailing from Niagara and other nearby Canadian locales. Many of these top entertainers are back with new acts this season, while others are new to the Peace Park venue in downtown Fonthill.

Local Fonthill native, Paul Ryan, has been busy this past winter making over 600 bird houses to sell as a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity Niagara. Paul has lived in Fonthill all his life and likes to give back to his community.

Street sweeping is set to begin in Pelham shortly and will be completed by approximately May 19, 2017. Residents are asked to please NOT park on streets during sweeping operations.

Pelham residents are invited to help plant six trees in Woodstream Park on Friday, April 28, in celebration of Arbour Day, the globally recognized initiative that promotes the growth and caring of trees. This year’s free community event is hosted in conjunction with Forests Ontario, Ontario’s Green Leaf Challenge and Ontario Wood and will take place from 1-3 p.m. All residents are invited to enjoy the family-friendly event and are asked to bring a shovel and gardening gloves; trees, forestry specialists, mulch, and snacks will be provided.

 

 Accipiter Radar continues to expand their capabilities and commitment to the Niagara Region with the grand opening of the Accipiter Hangar at the Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport, scheduled to take place on Friday May 5th at 10:00 am. The grand opening is part of an event planned by the Airport to thank local dignitaries, associates and the public for support they received in securing the $99,000 CIP 150 Grant for renovations.

Council proudly celebrated the Pelham Panthers Bantam AE and Minor Midget hockey teams provincial championships. The Bantam team travelled to Gravenhurst, ON, and defeated the South MuskokaBears 4-2 in the deciding game of the series. The Minor Midget team won their title in Schomberg, ON, in the fifth, and final, game of the series. This is the team’s second consecutive championship. Congratulations to all players and coaches on their success this year. 

The week of April 23rd to April 30th has been proclaimed National Volunteer Week.  Volunteer Canada has chosen this year’s theme as Volunteering Eh?   Encouraging us to think about all of the wonderful ways people care.  The imagery reflects the positive impact volunteers have on communities across Canada and this is certainly true of those who volunteer for Pelham Cares! 

Let us honour and thank those volunteers in our community who share their time, energy, knowledge, and abilities to sustain the Canadian spirit by committing themselves to address the needs of their communities through voluntary action.

Two months ago, I wrote about how Council approved our 2017 Operating Budget. Since the Province issued the property tax rate for Educational purposes last week, I can now provide you with an update on the total 2017 residential property tax bill.

The keynote presentation at this year's Fonthill Lions' Agriculture Night certainly addressed the impact of agriculture as a fundamental cornerstone of a healthy community. Guest Speaker, Aaron Breimer shared his story of going to Zambia to participate in an inspiring farming and entrepreneurship initiative known as the ‘One Seed’ Project.

The Enactus group at Lambton College began working on the project when one of their fellow students approached them to help him install solar panels at the Kasaka Basic School in rural Zambia where he had grown up.

Jessada Kongsommart is a young Thai artist who lives in Kalasin, Thailand. He earned his B.A. in Fine Art from Burapha University. He is enthusiastic and very active in supporting local artists and the artistic community. He is regularly invited to present and demonstrate how he creates his art to students of art at universities and colleges.

The 31st annual Pelham Art Festival will be held May 12, 13 and 14, 2017 at the Pelham Arena, 1120 Haist Street, Fonthill ON.

A Mother’s Day weekend tradition, the Pelham Art Festival features 75 juried fine artists and artisans exhibiting original artworks in oil, acrylic, encaustic, pastel, watercolour, mixed media, photography, pottery, ceramics, segmented and turned wood, glass and jewelry. There is something for every taste and every budget.

This past weekend the Kinsmen Club of Fonthill & District hosted their 22nd Annual Pelham Home and Garden Show. With a great variety of local vendors this show is always a great opportunity for Niagara residents to learn more about the businesses and service organizations located right here in our community.
