'No Man is an Island'

No man is an island entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. ~John Donne

After Citizen of the Year and serial Fundraiser extraordinaire, Frank Adamson, opened his remarks reflecting on this poem by John Donne he turned the tables on his fellow Citizens.

First, he described how Rotary Clubs across the globe had partnered together in 1985 to found The Global Polio Eradication Initiative. This public-private partnership is led by national governments with five partners – the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Over the last 30 years they have reduced polio cases by more than 99.9 percent and are nearing the finish line to completely eradicate the disease.

Using this example Frank explained that anyone with a seed of an idea can create much greater impact impact through community collaboration than an individual alone can achieve.

And then in his true leadership in action style he went on to demonstrate how our gathering of 100 people could each contribute $10 and with all the various available matching grants - VOILA! - turn $1,000 into $6,000.00 to help in the final push to End Polio.

With that he circulated donation jars around the room along with ink daubers for Donors to mark their index finger purple symbolizing the practice of temporarily marking a child’s finger with purple dye when they are vaccinated.

Before you knew it there was a cheering sea of purple stained fingers raised in the air and a $6,000.00 donation on its way to help End Polio!

That is the magic of Frank Adamson, our 2019 Pelham Citizen of the Year.
