Pelham Peer Award 2014: Gerry Berkhout of the Fonthill Lions Club

Lion Gerry Berkhout has served as an active member of the Fonthill Lions Club since 1969, more than 45 years!

He has always been a hard worker at each of the Lion’s many community fund raisers and has held a number of executive positions over the years.

Lions Gerry is so dedicated to the Fonthill Lions that you can find him working the canteen for the baseball players on Monday nights at the G.L. Kager Park from May to September.

He is among those Lions that are great at selling tickets for events, for draws, for anything. And, he uses various pseudonyms – Smithers, Wooden Shoes – to buy tickets and win at many draws himself.

His big project for the last 23 years has been the Annual Food Drive which takes place the first Saturday of December. He reached out beyond the Fonthill Lions club to mobilize volunteers from other Clubs, and hundreds of community-minded people and businesses. For many families, the Pelham Food Drive is the start of a generous Christmas season.

Thank you, Lion Gerry, for living up to the Lions Motto: “We Serve”

Presented annually in November, the “Peer Award” recognizes exemplary volunteers within the Town of Pelham. The Peer Award winners are nominated to receive the award by fellow members of the community service organizations that they participate in.
This year myPelham.com was honoured to be presented with the Corporate Recognition Award thanks to the nominations that we received from our local Volunteer Community.

During the coming weeks we will be sharing the Volunteer Service Profiles of each of our fellow award recipients here in our myPelham.com newsletter and via our social media channels.

Congratulations to all and thank you sincerely for everything that you do to help make our community a better place to live.
