Niagara Region and Niagara District Airport strengthen partnership through appointment of Interim CEO

The Niagara District Airport and Niagara Region are pleased to announce that Daniel Pilon, the Region’s Associate Director of Organizational Performance, has been seconded by the airport’s commission for the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer.

This unique secondment reflects the strong partnership between the Region and the Niagara District Airport. The three municipalities that currently fund the district airport (Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake) and the airport commission approached Niagara Region in 2015 to consider taking a larger role in airport operations. While the Region and municipalities complete their due diligence studies for this request, the secondment will provide Niagara Region the opportunity to support the operations and governance of the growing airport.

Through this appointment, the airport will benefit from Dan’s nearly two-decades of experience in providing strategic communication, business support services and effective leadership. While at Niagara Region, Dan has had numerous progressive responsibilities, including the successful management of multi-million-dollar department budgets, acting as a key advisor to the Regional Chair and CAO, liaising with the federal and provincial government and managing the corporate communications function. Most recently, Dan played a pivotal role in helping to secure the 2021 Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

This announcement comes during a time of unprecedented growth and excitement at the Niagara District Airport. Perhaps the most high-profile expansion is the popular FlyGTA service that has introduced daily commuter flights between the Niagara District Airport and Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto. Other successful businesses operating at airport include Allied Aviation, the St. Catharines Flying Club, National Helicopters. Future plans call for an airport maintenance facility and a large hanger development.

Regional Council set "Moving of People and Goods" as one of their strategic priorities for the 2014-2018 term. Interest in the airport is just one of the areas of focus; other successful initiatives include securing a provincial commitment for GO rail expansion, completion of the transportation master plan and support for inter-municipal transit.

"As chairman of the Niagara District Airport, I am delighted to welcome Dan to our team. We have put in place a strong operations team and now need to focus on future economic growth, the daily flights and future development. I am eager to see the positive progress that Dan will make regarding marketing, establishing strategic goals and helping us move forward with governance. This secondment will help us take full advantage of the many opportunities that are available to the airport, while strengthening our relationship with Niagara Region. Niagara District Airport is experiencing unparalleled growth and interest so the value of this partnership is both timely and unique." ~ Terry Flynn, Chairman, Niagara District Airport and Niagara-on-the-Lake Councillor

"This secondment represents an innovative approach to both how we actively support our partners, and our goal to bring economic prosperity to the region. We have made great progress in the area of moving people and goods in our communities and this is just another example of staff’s steadfast commitment to council’s strategic priorities. I am confident that Dan’s extensive experience at Niagara Region will be an invaluable asset to the Niagara District Airport as he assumes his role as Interim Chief Executive Officer." ~ Carmen D'Angelo, Chief Administrative Officer, Niagara Region
