Meet Colin Ferguson of Niagara Community Bikes

We noticed a new Vendor tent at the Welland Farmers Market and just had to stop in and take a closer look!

What is Niagara Community Bikes we asked? Colin Ferguson was happy to share his vision of the new social enterprise he is launching to serve our Niagara community.

"I am starting and hoping to build Niagara Community Bikes in our region.  The goal is providing the community with affordable means of transportation and moving on education and a place for people to work on their own bikes.

Right now we are asking anyone to donate their old bikes instead of them heading into land fills. We will take the bikes and refurbish them making them safe, comfortable, and road worthy. Any bikes which can not be fixed will be broken down for parts available to the community or fixing other bikes.  What is left will be properly recycled.

My idea sprouted from my time volunteering at New Hope Community Bike where I am still helping out now.  They have been doing the same thing for six years.  It is my vision for a future shop in Niagara." Colin Ferguson

Kudos to Colin for his community initiative.

Please help him out by cleaning out your garage this Spring and sending your unused bikes his way!

P.S. Colin is also a Bike Mechanic who operates a local business - Niagara Mobile Bike Maintenance specializing in mobile bike repair. While we visited with him at the Market we found it very interesting to learn that he often is asked to convert bikes into cruisers by changing the handlebars. Cruiser style bikes are having renewed popularity because they are more comfortable to ride especially for those of us who are not getting any younger.
