Mayor Dave Augustyn
Week of 26 July 2010
After the input by hundreds of residents, the hours of discussion at meetings, and the months of work by staff, it was a little odd that you could hear barely a sound when Council adopted the new Noise Bylaw at our regular meeting on July 19.
As you know, the Municipal Act allows Towns to pass bylaws to prohibit and regulate noise to preserve, protect, and promote public health, safety, welfare, and peace and quiet.
The ...
A couple of years ago signs started appearing in Niagara highlighting the entry to the Niagara Escarpment. An irate taxpayer confronted me to find out if Niagara Region was wasting taxpayers’ money on these pointless signs. After some research I found out that, while regional staff erected the signs with the regional logo, the funding was external. That satisfied the taxpayer but I was left with some question of the statement that the signs were pointless.
Sometimes we take for ...
I just about fell over
The Old Effingham Bugle doesn’t publish anymore, replaced over the years by papers in the big population cities like Niagara Fall, St Catharines, Welland, and the others. This is a pity because old Eustace Peabody, the editor, had eyes of a hawk and could smell a story from any altitude. I used to envy him when I read what he wrote. It was always different. And I was the person who fixed his noisy radiators in the old building he used, a ...

At a special meeting on June 15, Council debated the future of the Town-owned property at the corner of Rice Road and Regional Road #20. Council voted to “not dispose of any portion of the Town-owned lands in East Fonthill” until the resolution of three significant issues.
First, the lands must be converted from “Business Park” to other designations as part of the Official Plan review. You see, in 1997 the Town designated 59 acres ...
Don’t you just love it when guests arrive from out-of-town and you get to play tourist in Niagara? Just recently my cousin Stacey stopped by for a one day visit. We spent so much time touring Pelham that we didn’t even make it all the way to Niagara Falls.
We started off at the Pelham Visitor Information Centre located at the Log Cabin in Fonthill and then we stopped in at Lookout Point Golf Club. The Niagara vista, even from the vantage of the parking lot, is absolutely ...

For Whom the Bell Tolls
I don’t often go to downtown Fonthill because it’s such a hectic pace over there, far worse than Old Effingham, but the other day I did. It was quite entertaining watching the cars try to get out of the Town Square and on to South Pelham. I mean, who needs to go to the Merrittville Speedway? There’s what you call a blind spot right by the branch of the bank; there’s also another big blind spot when somebody parks on the ...

New online search tool promotes proper disposal of waste
Niagara Region has introduced an online search tool that provides information on proper disposal of common household waste items. The user-friendly tool allows residents to find out whether an item goes in the Blue Box, Grey Box or Green Bin; or if it should be taken to a drop off depot; or a household hazardous waste disposal day. The tool is available at www.niagararegion.ca under “Up Front”.

In order to increase awareness and in return, ridership in both directions, the Niagara GO Train Industry Committee has created a marketing plan consisting ...
M T Bellies was a sea of orange once again as Netherlands battled against Spain in a third attempt to bring home the World Soccer Cup. Once again Holland had to settled for a 2nd place finish. Not bad for a country of only 16 million -all be it - football crazy people.
What a pleasure to share in an unusual demonstration of such blatant Dutch exuberance and cultural pride. Generally, we wooden heads are known more for keeping our heads down, working hard and counting our pennies!

When my Emma was alive, she did all the books. These days, I try and sort through things as best I can. Now this new GST-PST-HST marriage has me flummoxed but I think I get it. All the taxes are lumped in one amount to make it easier for me, the merchants and the revenuers. And many things that were not taxed before are now taxed somehow. Oh, do I wish Emma was around. So going on, I had a look at the ...

While we here in Pelham are celebrating the introduction of our new state-of the-art playgrounds (as we should :) ordinary citizens in war-torn Iraq share similar priorities with respect to their community play areas.
At least this is my impression after reading this recent blog article posted by Yasmine Mousa reporting from Iraq for the New York Times: http://atwar.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/09/not-in-my-baghdad-yard-civic-protest-iraqi-style/

If you are attending the Community in Blooms Garden Tour this year make sure that you say hello to local artist Pat Haftar who will be busy painting away in Karen Vermeers home garden at 390 Canboro Rd. in Ridgeville. Pat says that she can't wait to find an extra special spot to set up her field easel and paint and is hopeful that the weather cooperates. Seems it's no fun painting in 40 degree heat.
Can't wait to see what Pat comes up with and we look forward to sharing ...
Recently there have been a number of news stories, both on television and in the newspapers, which have relayed situations where Canadians have run into "tax trouble" with Canada Revenue Agency as a result of improper transactions through their Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA). For this reason, I decided to revisit the TFSA in order to clarify how it works and how it can benefit you now and in retirement.
First a bit of background. In 2009, the TFSA was introduced by the Federal ...

Mayor Dave Augustyn’s Column
Week of 5 July 2010
I believe that a huge part of my service as your Mayor depends on two-way communication about issues and challenges facing Pelham. Part of that communication centres on my (mostly) weekly columns.
Each column takes me from 1.5 to 3.5 hours to write. To keep it to 400 words for the newspapers, I use much of that time researching and editing.
How do I decide on a column topic? I write about what people ask me about or express concern ...

A World of Noise
Harry Bell, down the street towards Vineland, had one of the yappiest dogs you could ever imagine, and everybody hated it. It didn’t bother Harry. He was having a fight with his wife Beryl at the time, and when the dog yapped he couldn’t hear her yelling at him. One noise cancelled out the other. Trouble is everybody else could hear this yappy dog.
Now I have nothing against dogs, mind you. I had one myself and about his ...

Our production of The Doctor’s Dilemma by Bernard Shaw has been playing to enthusiastic preview audiences for about one week now. When I saw its second dress rehearsal, I fell in love with the piece. It’s smart, well acted and beautifully designed. But then again, I’m the Public Relations Director, and according to my husband, I say that about everything at The Shaw.
So I’ve been slipping into the final act each time it’s previewed to watch the audience and get ...

When I was in the plumbing business, Abdul bin Hadad was the best pipe fitter I ever had working for me. The country he came from was part of another country in a country that was part of the old Ottoman Empire. I saw it once in the old atlas of Emma’s I keep up in the attic. In any event, when he grew up in that country the choices were simple: learn to use one of them AK47’s or learn how to fix the buildings that were being demolished by the car ...

When my wife Emma was alive, down the road from us, Jorgen Hump raised cows and produced milk from them, and he worked at the time when the cows needed him. If you can imagine a cow waiting to be milked, with a full udder, and the noise it would make because it could not speak English (much like a baby who is hungry and has not learned his ABC’ yet) you can imagine the demands on Jorgen’s time, and equipment. In Toronto, not long ago, there was an attempt to shut down a local post office outlet in a convenience store that had been around for years. All hell broke loose when the people who used it found out that they now had to go some distance away to a shopping centre to find the replacement facility inside a drug store. People in Toronto are not like country folk: they hate using cars; they love using streetcars and bicycles. But lugging that big package ...

Not many people remember how Old Effingham came into being and why it is not part of Pelham, even though it borders on it. Some say it was because the surveyors were drunk at the Beaverdams Tavern. Others say the mapmaker was tired.
